The Mensa Table range developed as part of a collaborative investigation of plywood construction between designer Liam Hopkins (Lazerian Studio) and artist Richard Sweeney. Through the hands-on manipulation of plywood, test models were produced to determine the behaviour of the material and how this could be applied to create modular structures. The physical tests informed the creation of computer generated models, from which the module shapes were derived, and these patterns used to cut the plywood components using a flatbed CNC router. The plywood units were then joined by hand with the use of bolts and wingnuts. Each table is finished by hand and laquered with matt varnish.
