Surface is a "sliceform", a form comprising several intersecting, cross-halved sections, created for the Festival of Arts event, Cartasia, held in Lucca, Italy, September 2007. The form of the piece was developed through computer modeling (using 3D Studio Max) and the making of paper maquettes, with the aim to reach a shape that gave a good balance between form and structural strength. Scale was also important; the design had to be small enough to be produced by myself on-site (within the allotted time scale of four days), yet large enough to make a presence in the allocated town square.
Each slice was drawn out using Autocad, then printed at full scale to create a template for the transference of the design onto the cardboard using pin-pricks. Once cut by hand, each slice was waterproofed by covering all exposed edges with paper tape, then painting with a PVA based medium. Wooden slats were placed beneath the piece to raise it, thus protecting it from the pooling of water on the ground.Click here for the Cartasia Website.
